What Do I Do NOW?!
Training drivers effectively is a key issue in trucking, particularly with the high verdicts affecting the industry. And safety training affects another key issue: Safety issues account for up to 20% of fleet turnover.
The most recent data on driver turnover from ATA comes from the fourth quarter of 2020, which reported that for the year, the turnover rate at large fleets averaged 89%, two points higher than the previous year.
The lack of enthusiasm for driver training is driven by the fact that many drivers see training as punishment rather than professional development. As a result, they reluctantly take training courses and see it as a nuisance which drives dismal results at best.
And with the current move toward opening interstate trucking jobs to those younger than 21, training drivers becomes more important than ever. As has been widely reported, the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, the agency that regulates trucking nationally, has proposed a pilot program to test whether long-haul truckers under age 21 are less safe.
