Are your truck operations earth-friendly?
We celebrated Earth Day on April 22, 2021, with many businesses creating new initiatives to save the earth.
But what about your fleet? Is it mostly running on diesel? Are you on board with a plan to move to more battery-electric and other zero-emission (ZE) commercial vehicles?
About 4.5 million Class 4 – Class 8 vehicles travel U.S. roads today. And each year, about 600,000 new vehicles are used for various commercial and government applications. But even if we were to manufacture only ZE vehicles starting now, it would take almost a decade to turn over the entire commercial fleet to ZE.
Some things to consider in moving your truck operations to ZE
For most firms, it’s essential to take a “paced” approach to conversion. Any fleet conversion must also factor in vehicles, facilities, and charging for electric vehicles (EV). Also of note:
Changing government incentives. Any changes to government incentives could change your plan’s strategy and timing. Regulations and other policies will continue to push companies into ZE deployment. Cities could restrict commercial access to non-EVs, such as forcing last-mile delivery fleets to convert to EVs faster.
Collaboration, partnerships, and mergers. The industry will continue to move forward with ZE initiatives due to incentives, innovation, and collaboration. You can be sure component providers and charging and utility companies will stay three steps ahead of industry changes and combine one another’s strengths, paving the way for change.
Connectivity and telematics. Data from telematics technology will continue to help fleets become more cost-effective, more efficient, and safer. Since most battery EVs will be connected, this data will help EV usage evolve and help other fleets move toward adoption.
Technology improvements. As the initial alternative-powered prototypes move to a true first-generation EV and then to the second generation, EVs’ design, cost, and performance will improve. Battery technology will also improve as powerful cells become lighter and less costly. The cost of batteries per kilowatt-hour (kWh) needs to go from $200 to $100/kWh before most fleets start to consider EVs seriously.
